The Bartek “SENATOR” Czernikiewicz Rugby Scholarship
This 2016 Season, the University of Illinois RFC will join a very select group of universities across the nation offering scholarships for participation in Rugby. After almost a year of paperwork and preparation from RFC alumni and family members, the University of Illinois Foundation established a scholarship in honor of Bartek “SENATOR” Czernikiewicz, who passed away suddenly from natural heart complications last Memorial Day.
Senator’s Role in the RFC
Senator was an active member of the Illinois RFC from 2006-2010. He exemplified leadership both on and off the pitch and helped with the administration of the team in many critical ways. Acting as club President, he oversaw the transition of our competitive level to Division I and had to take care of many individual issues that got the club into some trouble off the pitch. Thanks to his efforts, a few bad, naked apples did not spoil the bunch.
What We Aim to Accomplish with this Fund
In an effort to build on the character Bartek personified, the Senator Rugby Scholarship will be a yearly, one time award to a first year student that has played rugby in high school, participated in a semester playing for the Illinois RFC, and has shown leadership both on and off the pitch. This scholarship will help with creating exposure for the RFC, assist with recruitment and retention of talented players, and ultimately be another step in building a top tier rugby program at the University of Illinois.
